Race story | Newman gets late push, wins

But he elected to hit pit road on a late caution to get fresh tires, leaving him ninth for a restart with 20 laps to go.

Dale Earnhardt Jr., trying to win in his first points race with Hendrick Motorsports after flourishing in the run-up events during Speedweeks, stayed on the track and took over the lead.

Roy McCauley, Newman's crew chief, chose to leave his driver out, too, anticipating more wrecks were likely and that track position might prove beneficial.

McCauley was right about the wrecks. There were three more cautions following that restart on Lap 181. He was right about the track position, too, for when the field lined up for the final restart with three laps left Newman was still fourth and within sight of the front.

Jeff Burton was leading, but when the green flew to start Lap 198 one group went low and another went high.

Jim Coleman: How to stop that meringue from weeping

Q: For Valentine's Day, I am making my boyfriend's favorite dessert, lemon meringue pie. I have his family's recipe, and the last time I made it, I followed the recipe exactly. It looked great and tasted great, but there was one problem: The golden meringue pulled away from the edges of the pan, and underneath the meringue was very watery. Can you please send me another recipe and tell me how to prevent this mistake? Is there a way to fix the recipe I have?

- Lynn H.

A: You sound like such a great girlfriend. I'm so touched. Every time I look at your letter I can barely read it because of all the weeping . . .

No, it's not me weeping - all that sobbing is coming from your meringue. Weeping is the culinary term for what is going wrong with your meringue.

JAQUITTA'S JOURNEY: Read Her Blog

I thought I'd write a quick blog before taking my 3 to 4 hour nap.

Radiation has finally kicked in and it makes me incredibly tired. The doctors mentioned fatigue, and I'm experiencing it.

To bottom line it: I feel tired the majority of the time. However, I only have a few days left before it's all over. The countdown is on! The only side note is that doctors have warned me that even though the radiation will be over in a few days, I may still feel the effects 2 months after. So, Happy Joy, joy right?

Anyway, I try to sleep as much as I can. I will admit working and getting treatment is wearing on me a bit, but if it gets to be too much I just have to back off.

I have to accept the fact that my extra pounds are still holding on. I've been told it comes off gradually, that the chemo med's are still kicking in my body and that's part of the reason why it's not coming off as rapidly as I'd like.

Good Neighbor’s cupboard is bare in Anderson

ANDERSON — Tuna fish, grits, canned pumpkin and cranberry sauce — that's about all that's left in the warehouse for the Good Neighbor Cupboard in Anderson.

Now that the season of giving is over, the food pantry is looking at bare shelves and slim pickings for its 500-plus customers a month.

What the cupboard needs is food.

On Wednesday, a typical day for the cupboard, Mr. Berry said volunteers gave away 18 boxes of food. Over the course of 2007, the cupboard served more than 5,700 people, up from 4,737 in 2006.

With more people to feed, the organization is feeling the crunch.

“I think we've been kind of overshadowed by Anderson Interfaith Ministries and other high- profile food banks," he said. “We started in 1982, and for 20 years, we were the only food bank around."

Open between 10:30 a.m.

Red Baron's big antiques auction Feb. 23-24

Among the most popular items sure to find buyers are furniture pieces, said Brown. This weekend's sale boasts a rosewood double dial clock from Vienna with a pearl inlay and gold-over-bronze paw feet. There's also an Italian Renaissance walnut mantel with figures of Atlas, bronze urns and detailed carvings of birds and flowers. In between will be lighting, dining room and bedroom sets, paintings, architectural pieces and jewelry.

The action is fast and sometimes furious, with items that don't generate a lot of buzz being pushed aside to make room for the next. Prices can start as low as $100 and go into the multi-millions, but the majority of sales fall between $10,000 and $15,000. The fall auction featured Tiffany windows from an old church that sold for $29,000. A three-foot polished bronze wall clock pulled in $9,500.
